Kang Lee: Can you really tell if a kid is lying?
During the November TED Circles, we will listen to TED TALKS and discuss ideas about truth telling and lying. The following overall questions will guide our discussions:
- What do we like to believe about ourselves or with regard to matters around and close to us?
- What biases do we carry and how do those color our perceptions of truth?
- What deceptions do we engage in?
- And, do we recognize and accept those in others?
Are children poor liars? Do you think you can easily detect their lies? Developmental researcher Kang Lee studies what happens physiologically to children when they lie. They do it a lot, starting as young as two years old, and they're actually really good at it. Lee explains why we should celebrate when kids start to lie and presents new lie-detection technology that could someday reveal our hidden emotions.
