Thanksgiving Dinner is all done. Turkey leftovers are on menu for the next week. Christmas Trees are being decorated and stockings are being hung. Remember these simple tips to avoid disaster...
1) If you have a real tree:
- Make sure it is being well watered! As soon as the needles begin to fall off the tree easily, when the branches are tapped or lightly shaken, it's time for the tree to go away.
- Do not use candles on the tree! Old nostalgic memories are great keepsakes. Keep them that way... great memories.
- Keep the trees away from heat sources, stoves, radiators, space heaters
- Watch this video from the NFPA, National Fire Protection Association, of a Christmas Tree fire to understand how fast and large these fires develop.
2) Avoid extension cord use. Use a power strip with surge protection if the outlet is not within reach. And don't run any cord under rugs or carpets. As they are being stepped on small breaks in the wire will develop over time causing short circuits and excess heat in the cord.
3) Watch your Holiday feasts as they are cooking. Remember cooking related fires are the number one cause of home fires.
