[ARCHIVED] Annual Hydrant Inspection and Maintenance Begin

Map of St. Cloud with flushing areas outlined in colors

The St. Cloud Public Utilities Department will be completing their annual hydrant inspections and maintenance this year in Area A (see map).

The City of St. Cloud owns, operates and maintains 3,400 hydrants. Hydrants are inspected every other year by the Public Utilities Department to ensure reliable operation. The greatest benefit of comprehensive hydrant inspection and maintenance program is reliable operation of any hydrant needed for a fire emergency.

During this time, hydrants will be flushed and tested to ensure adequate flow and pressure is available for fire protection and to identify any malfunctions of the hydrant and related valves. Other benefits of regular flushing is the removal of sediment from pipes to maintain water clarity and quality in the distribution system.

While hydrants are being flushed, the water in your home may briefly have a brownish-rust colored appearance. There is no health hazard associated with discolored water, and the water is safe for consumption. Running your faucets for a few minutes will help clear up any discoloration. Avoid using your dishwasher or washing machine and turning on household faucets while City crews are flushing in your area.
