[ARCHIVED] Staying Hydrated AND Healthy – St. Cloud’s Drinking Water Treatment Process Removes Viruses

Animated image of water droplets entering and leaving water tower

St. Cloud Public Utilities is committed to ensuring all customers have access to clean, safe drinking water.

This commitment is embodied in our water treatment process – which removes contaminants and pathogens (like the COVID-19 virus) from our drinking water – giving us safe, fresh water every day.

St. Cloud’s drinking water goes through a multi-step disinfection process, ensuring the removal of all pathogens (like viruses, bacteria and protozoa) at the facility, and on the way to your home, business or any other location.

Stage 1: Rapid mixing, flocculation and clarification remove most pathogens from water

Stage 2: Chemicals, including lime, are added to remove additional pathogens

Stage 3: Water undergoes primary disinfection to deactivate pathogens

Final Stage: Secondary disinfection to prevent any bacteria from growing in the water as it travels through the distribution system

Watch the video on our Drinking Water Services page to learn more about how our water gets from the Mississippi River to our homes.
