The Engineering Department plans, designs and administers Public Works projects to enhance the health, safety, and welfare of the residents of St. Cloud.
Some of the more frequent types of projects that involve Engineering Department participation include:
- Extensions and replacements of the City’s wastewater collection and portable water distribution systems.
- Installation of storm water conveyance projects that reduce the probability of flooding due to rainfall runoff events.
- Street expansion projects that provide for accessibility, mobility, and capacity to serve increasing traffic volumes on our major routes.
- Neighborhood revitalization projects that involve the replacement and/or rehabilitation of aging street and underground utility infrastructure.
- Alley paving.
- Traffic control signal systems.
- New residential subdivisions and new commercial and industrial developments.
Other projects in which the Engineering Department participates include:
- Potable water storage tanks.
- Water treatment plant enhancements.
- Wastewater treatment plant improvements.
- Airport expansion.
The Engineering Department seeks public input and participation for their projects through public informational meetings and public hearings. The Department considers public input received and, to the extent practicable, addresses such information while designing improvement projects.
In addition to implementing public improvement projects, the City Engineering Department serves the citizens of St. Cloud in numerous other functions such as:
- Infrastructure planning, which involves long range considerations of the water main, sanitary sewer, storm water, and street systems, to ensure that these facilities provide quality service in the future for projected levels of population.
- Traffic engineering, which includes designing, constructing and timing traffic signal systems, performing traffic volume counts and speed studies, and analyzing the need for and implementing parking restrictions and traffic control signing and pavement markings.
- Working closely on engineering related issues with other City Departments, and other agencies. Included are the three counties in which the city lies, the surrounding communities, Mn/DOT, the MPCA, the Minnesota Department of Health, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
